Our lab has recently detected positive results for Bordetella pertussis in several of our samples, emphasizing the ongoing presence of whooping cough in the community. This bacterium is responsible for causing a highly contagious respiratory infection that can lead to severe coughing fits, often followed by a “whooping” sound when inhaling.
Bordetella pertussis is especially dangerous for infants, young children, and individuals with weakened immune systems, making early detection crucial for timely intervention and treatment. It’s also important to note that those who are infected can spread the disease even before showing symptoms, which underscores the significance of prompt diagnosis.
